Who is Allah?
The existence of this entire universe—including human beings, jinn, birds, and animals—is not a matter of chance or luck. This perfectly designed universe is proof of the existence of a Creator, a Planner, and a Controller of its affairs.
This naturally implies that this Creator is the sole Owner and Master of all the things that exist. He is the one who manages the affairs of this world. He is the lawgiver who demands obedience and compliance to His laws. He is the only authority worthy of worship by His creations/slaves—human beings and jinn.
Allah says:
"To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the soil. And if you speak aloud, then verily, He knows the secret and that which is yet more hidden. Allah! There is no God but Him! To Him belong the Best Names."
(Quran, Surah Ta Ha 20:6-8)
2. How can we know Allah?
Allah sent His Prophets with His books to let people know about Himself. The Prophets were men chosen by Allah for His revelation.
Allah says:
"Verily, I am Allah! There is no God but Me, so worship Me, and perform Salah for My remembrance.''
(Quran, Surah Ta Ha 20:14)
Our perfect form and shape in itself is proof of the existence of our Creator.
Allah questions people regarding their creation in the following verse: Were they brought into existence without a maker, or did they create themselves?
"Or were they created by nothing Or were they themselves the creators
Or did they create the heavens and the earth Nay, but they have no firm belief."
(Quran, Surah At Tur 52:35-36)
Every Muslim should know about Allah Subhanahu wa Tala. The way to know about Allah is through the text of the Quran and hadith. The Quran speaks directly about Allah, describing His essence, names, and attributes. Which is further explained in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
We should understand the verses of the Quran in the way the earliest generations—the sahabah and those who learned from them—understood it.
Knowledge about Allah is the noblest of all knowledge. Seeking this knowledge is an act of worship and brings great reward. Indeed, Allah, Subhanahu wa Tala, has made knowledge a prerequisite for our deeds, as confirmed in the divine verse:
فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَىٰكُمْ
"So know that there is no god but Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest."
(Quran, Surah Muhammad 47:19)
Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) stated:
"Knowledge precedes expression and action" (al-Wahhab, 1979).
Allah is Our Rabb
Rabb means the Lord and Master who manages the affairs of His servants and holds the authority to guide them. He bestows various blessings upon them, guiding and caring for them. He sustains and governs the affairs of all creation. The term Rabb also encompasses the meanings of Creator, Owner, and Provider.
Allah tells us about Himself as the Rabb of all that exists in the following verse:
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"[All] Praises are [due] to Allah the Lord of all the worlds."
(Quran, Surah al Fatihah 1:2)
Allah warns us against speaking or acting without knowledge. We must have firm knowledge of Allah before speaking about Him or performing any actions in His name.
"And follow not that of which you have no knowledge. Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart of each of those ones will be questioned (by Allah)."
(Quran, Surah Al Isra 17:36)
Importance of Knowing Allah Subhanahu wa Tala
Knowing Allah elevates our status in the eyes of our Rabb
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The key to the call of the Messengers, the essence of their Message, is knowing Allah through His Names and Attributes and Deeds, because this is the foundation on which the rest of the Message, from beginning to end, is built.
(Al-Sawaaiq al-Mursalah ala al-Jahamiyyah wal-Muattilah by Ibn al-Qayyim, 1/150-151).
When we learn about Allah, we fulfill the purpose for which we are created. However, if we neglect this, we disregard our true reason for existence.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said, “To whomever Allah wills goodness, He grants him understanding of the religion.”
(Sahih Al Bukhari 71)
Understanding Allah and His religion brings excellence to our character
The Prophet Peace be upon him said, “The best of you in the time of ignorance is the best of you in Islam if you have understanding.”
(Sahih Al Bukhari 3374)
1. To fulfill the purpose of one's creation:
Allah has created Humans and Jinn to worship Him alone.
Mankind should believe in the one LORD ALLAH and obey Him. This is the main objective of human life.
Allah (Glory be to him) says: “And I have not created the Jinn & Mankind except that they should worship me.
(Quran, surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56).
2: To attain success of this world and the Hereafter:
After the creation of humans & sending them to earth, Allah didn’t leave people in vain, but He guided them with the Ilm of the Quran & the Sunnah. So that they can gain the pleasure of this life & the hereafter.
The superiority of Adam over other creations is due to the knowledge that was given to him by Allah. His intellect and ability to understand and his ability to choose the right from the wrong.
Allah (Glory be to him) said: “And He taught Adam the names- all of them, then presented them to angles and said inform Me the names of these if you are truthful”.
(Quran, surah Al Baqarah 2:31)
Allah gave Adam the understanding of things and, the ability to recognize and name them. Adam and his children's intellect is far superior to that of any other creation of Allah in the universe.
The best of the creation of Allah from amongst the people are those who use this intellect and choose to obey Allah willingly.
When the first revelation came to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) it was an order to read, to use the intellect to understand who is Allah the one and the only Creator of all that exists.
“Read in the name of your Lord who created”
(Quran, surah Al Alaq 96:1)
The Quran came down as a means of guidance for people.
Knowledge of the religion of Allah is the greatest blessing that Allah bestowes upon His slaves
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “When Allah wishes good for a person, he makes him understand the religion”.
(Sahih Al Bukhari 69)
3: To be guided towards the Truth and to remain steadfast:
Man is created from clay, he is very feeble and shaky. He gets attracted by the delusions of this world very easily. The attractions of the world are temporary and will come to an end very soon. To make man follow the straight path Allah sent down the books through His messengers. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was sent with the Quran and the Sunnah so that people recognize their LORD and are guided towards the Truth. Religious knowledge from the authentic sources is important because it helps people, to differentiate between halal & haram and gives them the ability to differentiate between culture and Islam, and most importantly, to attain the TAQWA of ALLAH subahanhau was ta'la.
Allah (glory be to him) says:
“It is only those who have knowledge among his slaves that fear Allah. Verily Allah is All Mighty, Oft Forgiving.”
(Quran, surah Fatir 35:28)
One must seek the knowledge of the Quran & Sunnah to gain the guidance from Allah.
The prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 224, Sahih Al Albani)
4: To attain the love of Allah:
Seeking knowledge is prescribed throughout one's life till death. It is essential for the seekers of knowledge to combine meeting worldly needs with the pursuit of knowledge. It is the best way to spend one's time, youth and lfe in.
Blessings of knowledge do not die with a person but follow him in his grave.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “When a man dies his deeds come to an end except for three things:
1: Ongoing Charity (Sadaqatul Jareeyah)
2: Beneficial Knowledge left behind
3: A righteous child who prays for him.”
(Sahih Muslim 1631)
He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “He who follows a path in quest of knowledge. Allah will make the path of JANNAH easy for him.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646, graded sahih)
He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge,
1. Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise.
2. Angels lower their wings over the seeker of knowledge being pleased with what he does.”
3. The inhabitants of heaven & earth & even the fish in the depths of the ocean seek forgiveness for him.
4. The superiority of the scholar over the devout Muslim is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars.
5. The learned people are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 3641, sahih Al Albani)
The scholars are so valuable that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The world with all that it contains is accursed except for the remembrance of Allah what is conducive to that is the knowledgeable person and the learning person”.
(At Tirmidhi 2322, graded hasan)
Moreover, for the acceptance of any deed be it SALAH, FASTING, HAJJ, or SADQAH by Allah two conditions are to be fulfilled:
1: It should be for the sake of Allah (Ikhlas).
2: It should be in accordance to the Sunnah of the Prophet
A person can attain the closeness of Allah by acquiring religious knowledge and by acting upon it.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was sent as a favor to convey to people the words of Allah. Hence his sunnah is the only way that can lead one to Jannah.
5: Etiquette of Seeking Knowledge:
One should follow certain etiquettes to be successful in attaining knowledge.
Allah tells the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to ask for the increase in knowledge. By saying this duaa:
“Rabbi Zidnee Ilma” (رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا)
(…my lord increases me in knowledge.)
(Quran, surah Ta Ha 20:114)
Conclusion:
One should seek forgiveness from Allah for any shortcomings and weaknesses, by giving constant reminders first to oneself & then to others of utilizing one’s time, health & skills in the pursuit of seeking knowledge of the Quran & the Sunnah.
This should help one to apply correct knowledge properly in one's life and to die in the state of Imaan.
What is Islam?
Islam is a way of life. It means peace and surrender. A person who surrenders himself to God (Allah) is a Muslim. If you surrender your will to Allah, you will find peace.
Allah is the creator of all things that exist. He created matter and energy and set up natural laws for the functioning of the entire universe free of disorder and chaos.
Allah says in the Quran,
He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each running for an appointed term. Verily, He is the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving.
(Quran, Surah Az Zumar 39:5)
The goal of Islam is to help people live in harmony with each other and with other creations of Allah. We can say that the other creations of Allah (e.g. the sun, the moon, the stars etc.) are Muslims as they obey Allah and submit to His will.
While Mankind and Jinn who decide to believe in Allah and obey Him entirely are Muslims and others are not.
Allah created human beings and placed them on earth. Allah gave intelligence and free will. They can choose to obey Allah or disobey Him if they wish.
Allah says,
Verily, We guided him to the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful. (Quran, Surah Al Insan 76:3)
Allah sent His Messengers and Prophets to guide people. They are the beacons of light to show the people the right way to His religion, to make people strong and help them to not give in to their emotions like hatred, violence, and greed. Human beings are tempted by desires as a result they indulge in sinful actions, and unjustified fighting creating chaos.
How did Allah communicate to us?
Allah communicated to us through His Messengers. The messengers or prophets are men chosen by Allah to send His message to people. He sent messages to His Prophets in the form of revelation. Allah has created us and knows best how we can make a civilized society. People who adhere to Allah’s way of life are promised rewards when the journey of their soul in this world will end.
When the life of this universe will end, Allah will collapse all matter and energy back into nothing. Then Allah will resurrect us to stand before Him on the Day of Judgement.
Allah sent His final Message to all of humanity in the form of a book called the Quran. It is an instruction book to make people understand what is right and what is wrong. Do you know which prophet was given this book? The last Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Who is Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (peace be upon him)?
He was a man born in 6th century Arabia; his message was meant for everyone that will exist on this earth till the last day of this world. He is the last and the final Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
Allah says in the Quran,
Verily, this Qur'an guides to that which is most just and right and gives good news to those who believe, those who do righteous deeds, that they will have a great reward (Paradise).
(Quran, Surah Al Isra 17:9)
What is Quran?
Quran is the uncreated speech of Allah. Conveyed by Him through angel Jibreel to Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him It is the only book that has survived unchanged for centuries. To study Islam, we must read and understand the Quran according to the way Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) explained it.
Allah has made the Quran easy to understand.
Allah says,
And indeed, We have made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember; then is there any that will remember. (Quran, Surah Al Qamar 54:40)
Quran is divided into 30 Juzz (parts), to make it easy to recite in one month. It has 114 chapters called surah and each surah is divided into verses called ayaat. All Surah have names and they are placed in a fixed order. When we quote any ayah from the Quran, we first write the name of the surah to which the ayah belongs, then its number followed by the ayah number. Some surah are long with more than 200 ayaat and some are short with only 3 ayaat. Surah Fatihah is the first surah of the Quran and has seven ayaat or verses, so if we write [Quran, Surah Fatihah 1:2], it means 2nd ayah of surah Fatihah which is the first surah of the Quran.
To understand the Quran correctly we must study the life of Prophet Muhammad He was the living Quran. Whatever Allah instructed him to do Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) applied in his life and his followers did the same. The companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) are our role models. They are called the sahabah (companions).
Who is a Sahabi?
A person who accepted Islam, saw Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and died as a Muslim. The sahabah are the family and companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and they obeyed him to the best of their capacity. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.
Allah gave them special virtues and noble characteristics. They attained great honour and high status with Allah. They had sincerity, loyalty, and willingness to follow Islam. Allah has promised them Paradise by virtue of their love and obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
How can we be good Muslims?
To become good Muslims, we should follow Quran and the sunnah and learn about the lives of the sahabah. We can be good Muslims by choosing the right actions and staying away from bad deeds.
A person who believes and follows the Quran and the Sunnah will make obedience to Allah the goal of his life. Such a person will be the successful one in the Hereafter.
